I’ve always had trouble during the first 12 months with a baby! I’m a planner and a scheduler, and I need to get baby on a schedule and follow it. Ever since having some guidance from a mom friend with older kids, I adopted Baby Wise. You set the schedule – you wake up the baby at a set time every day, and feed them every so many hours depending on age. If they are asleep (especially as a newborn), you wake them to eat. This doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s worked for me!  I know what time I’ll be feeding the baby, how long she should stay awake, and when she will be napping. At 7 months, baby K is eating every 4 hours, and napping 2-3 times a day.

I become a super crazy person about the schedule, and being home for nap times. I was being a little flexible and wearing the ergo for naps so that I could take out the older kids, or meet for playdates, or just get out!  But after hurting my back which put me out of commission for quite a bit, I realized K is too heavy now for the Ergo! This means we stay home for naps, which makes me feel quite trapped!

Here is what a day looks like – on a perfect day!

Wake up time 7:00am
7 -Nurse, breakfast
8:00 #1 is off to school
8:30 school drop off!
Nap time 9am – 11am
11- Nurse, lunch
Pick up #3 at 11:30….I CAN GET OUT! 11:30-1
nap time 1-3pm
3- nurse
3:30 #1 and #2 pick up.
I COULD GET OUT… with 4 kids if I wanted??!!
catnap 5-5:30
5:30 dinner
7:00 bedtime prep
7:30 nurse/and to bed

Add in pick up times for the other kids and my window of getting out is very slim!
In between there, I have to make time to make food for the baby, and make dinner.
I always view the first year as a hard time!  I do give bottles for a little more freedom, but not too often.

Thank God for my parents who fill in for me often. My dad babysat this morning, and he knows how crazy I am…

This cracked me up! I love him!

Once I am done nursing around 11 months to 1 year, I feel like I am FREE!
I am still stuck at home for naps, but the baby can switch to almond milk, and eat more of everything that we eat!  Of course, I don’t want to rush this time either! My favorite quote, “The days are long but the years are short.” It goes by so quickly!  I am just trying to take deep breaths and enjoy!

Do you struggle with the first year?

  1. Yeah, the naps are murder. Both mine have been screamers to go over. My nerves hate it. They are fine provided they are tired in their cots but schedules are very rough as have to be tired. Also in the buggy past a certain month they just won’t go over unless i am seriously walking. I think they think they are missing out. Very tieing! Love your dad’smnote. Brilliant. Go him!

  2. I’m slightly beyond the first year, and I’m still struggling! Sleep has been terrible lately and the cumulative effect of not sleeping for a year is getting harder and harder to deal with.
