Tis’ the season of traveling, stress, many events, lack of sleep, and long to-do lists. During this time of year, and anytime when you will be traveling, making health a priority is key! One main goal for traveling and stressful times is planning ahead. When you are low on sleep, have not eaten in a while, or stressed out, it is easy to make poor choices. Additionally, when blood sugar is low, is it difficult to not overeat. Proper planning can help alleviate most of these problems. Check out the tips below and then let me know how you make health a priority when you travel.
PACK A PROTEIN OR GREENS BAR
Many protein bars are packed with sugar, but look for a brand with low sugar and high protein. Read the ingredients carefully. Aside from the natural flavors, I like the NO COW brand and the new organic LaraBars with Superfoods will fit the bill as well. There’s a 20% off coupon for NO COW bars on Amazon right now!
HAVE HEALTHY SNACKS ON HAND
In between meals, have healthy snacks at the ready so that you don’t end up ravenous and make poor decisions.
For this, I like to keep a handful of almonds, almond butter packs, homemade trail mix or a bar.
BRING A STAINLESS STEEL CUP and GREENS PACKETS
Blender bottles, or a stainless steel travel cup are great for traveling, and there are lots of greens packets that you can mix with water. My favorite greens packets are Amazing Grass. By putting a variety of greens into your body, it helps keep the immune system going strong.
BRING A WATER BOTTLE
Always have water! Drinking water helps with hydration, immune health, body composition and overall health, especially when traveling. Use that stainless steel bottle to keep it cold!
GET OUTSIDE and EXERCISE
No matter where you are, spend time outside. A morning walk or run is an excellent choice. In colder temperatures, being outside in the moderate cold actually helps boost the immune system. In warmer temperatures, a nice dosage of Vitamin D from the sun is helpful for immune health. Daily exercise has even been found to slow the aging process. I like to bring my resistance bands and core sliders with me and my laptop to do BeachBody on Demand!
FOCUS ON SLEEP. PACK MELATONIN.
Circadian rhythms and staying on the same sleep/wake cycle daily is very important to overall health. Continue to make sleep a priority and aim for 7-8 hours a night. A melatonin supplement can help you fall asleep and stay asleep is can be helpful when you are in an unfamiliar setting where sleep might be difficult. Love Tranquil Sleep by Natural Factors! A white noise app or machine is also key for a good night of sleep.
Most of all, be prepared! Eat a healthy meal before flying and do not rely on airplane/train/travel/airport food for good options. Always have extra water, and pack whatever you can to keep healthy throughout your travels. Be active as much as possible throughout your travels.
